Why One Encode Isn't Enough

A 4K video looks great on a 27-inch monitor with a 100 Mbps connection. That same file on a phone over LTE? It’ll buffer, drain the battery, and look no better than a 720p stream on that screen size.

The solution is multi-device video encoding — creating multiple versions of each video, each optimized for a specific combination of screen size, connection speed, and device capabilities. The problem is that doing this manually is tedious and technical. You need to choose codecs, set bitrate ladders, pick resolution breakpoints, and re-encode every time you upload a new video.

Content-Aware Video Compression

Not all video content compresses the same way. A talking-head video with a static background compresses very efficiently — you can drop the bitrate significantly without visible quality loss. A fast-motion sports clip or a detailed product demo needs higher bitrates to maintain clarity.

SmartVideo’s encoding pipeline analyzes your content and adjusts compression settings accordingly. Static scenes get lower bitrates (smaller files, faster loads) while high-motion segments get higher bitrates (sharper detail where it matters). This content-aware approach means smaller files without the visual quality trade-offs of fixed-bitrate encoding.
